Description

In 1854, the domain was started by the Carteyron family. Vines and orchards. Since 1982 Patrick Carteyron is the owner of Château Penin and Grand Clauset. Not so strange because Penin has been owned by the Carteyron family for 5 generations. Grand Clauset he got through his mother’s side. In total 45 ha near Génissac not far from Libourne and Saint-Emilion. In this area between the Dordogne and the Garonne a lot of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur is made. Also by Patrick. Next to red also white, rosé and clairet.

In this case a bottle of white and red, award winning wines:

Château Penin blanc: Wood-ripened and “sur lie” this beautiful white Bordeaux. Besides Sauvignon Blanc also some Sauvignon Gris and Semillon. Because of the short wood ripening you can taste citrus fruit and light wood tones. Full and powerful. Delicious as an aperitif, of course, but best with shellfish and fish.
Perswijn wrote: “freshness, round, pure, good acidity, citrus, pear, green apple, fine length”.
La Revue du Vin de France writes: “bouche de belle rondeur et maturité intéressante. Avec ces notes de fruits macérés et de noisette, il est immédiat et très gourmand.”.
Gold Medal at Concours Mondial du Sauvignon.
Guide Hachette 2018: 1 star for the 2015 or very successful wine.
Hachette 2019 about the 2016: “une bouche souple, élégante, bien equilibrée entre gras et acidité” and again 1 star.

Vivino: 4,0 (****), Best 6% of all wines worldwide.

Château Penin ‘Grande Sélection’: This is the better cuvée from Penin. Made from 100% Merlot, from the somewhat older vines. The wine matures for 12 months in barriques, of which 1/3 is renewed every year. Beautiful balance between ripe fruit and soft wood tones. A wine with an excellent price-quality ratio. The smell is warm and spicy, with nice wood and cherries; the taste is powerful and fierce, cassis, leather and spices Also with freshness, nice juice and firm tannins.

Many times the Château Penin – Bordeaux Supérieur Grande Sélection won the “coup de coeur” of the Guide Hachette.
Decanter World Wine Awards gives the 2015 a Bronze Medal and 87/100 points. Decanter on the 2016: “the floral pivoine and violet aspects seduce you – and this wine transcends the appellation. Bravo!”
RVF juin 2018 gives 15-15,5/20 Coup de coeur, “un 100% Merlot qui se distingue par la qualité de ses tanins et offre un bon potentiel de garde.”
Hachette 2020 gives the 2016 score of !*.

Vivino: 2,8 (****), Best 5% of all wines worldwide.
